Weekend Getaways: A Young Professional Retires to Southwest Florida

The holiday season officially kicked off with my family’s annual pre-Thanksgiving holiday season decor extravaganza.

After flying in from Dulles, which had an incredibly unfortunate and rather inhospitable Terminal Z, with Frontier Airlines, which charges you for carry-ons as well as checked bags, it was time to retire for the weekend. What’s a young professional to do during a weekend of early retirement?

Fine homecooked dining, driving around snowbirds, enjoying the sunshine, going to the opera, and Christmas decorating was perfect for two nights and two days.

I had the opportunity to go to my first opera during the weekend, the opera being La bohème at the Philharmonic. I loved trying to use my minimal Italian and a combination of French and Spanish to follow along with the singing. It was incredible how long it would sometimes take to say one sentence! I really enjoyed the experience and further cultivating my knowledge of theater. It also put me in the mood to watch Rent, which is based off of La bohème.

Florida also provided an excellent temporary variation in climate just as DC weather commentators were starting to go wild with our November weather. While I love not living where there are palm trees right now, they are nice every now and then.

When I wasn’t outside enjoying being poolside, I enjoyed bringing the first aspects of holiday cheer into the house. Holiday decorating is like a festive puzzle. You’re presented with various, semi-familiar pieces (“oh this!”) and, after checking they are in working order, you need to strategically put them together to make a winter wonderland.
