Uttlandsvensk i Stockholm: Gamla Stan, Djurgården, Riddarholmen

English begins after the introduction

From the central location of my hotel (Nordic C Hotel), a lovely stroll could get me anywhere I wanted to go. I walked south from the train station towards Riksdagen, and these are the places I revisited:

DSC_0463Riddarholmen: Riddarholmen is a huge favorite of mine. It’s elegant, it has a lovely church, and it has gorgeous views of Stadshuset and Söder and Norr Mälarstrand. This is the place to view the beautiful landmark and waterfront areas n any season.

Gamla Stan: Next stop, the neighboring Gamla Stan. This part of the city translates to “Old Town,” and has existed as the core of Stockholm since the 1200s. Today, the winding streets will take you past tourist shops, specialty boutiques, cafés for Fika, restaurants, and residential buildings. I took Västerlånggatan from the Main Street coming from Riddarholmen (also home to what I would call Stockholm’s Very Little Italy, several Italian restaurants all clustered together), stopped in at Stortorget, continued through Gamla Stan, and then walked along the waterfront to the King’s castle. Importantly, during the holiday season you will find Europe’s largest real Christmas tree at Skeppsbron, which is definitely worth visiting at dusk.

Djurgården: After a brief walk to Grand Hotel from Gamla Stan, my half-sister picked me up and we headed to Djurgården. This part of town is really unique- museums, a working museum, an amusement park, parks, countryside-like buildings, restaurants, and cafés.

More photos to come, I’m just about to board my flight to London! Ciao for now!
